چکیده

Th e family Gobiidae includes what are considered the typical gobies: small, usually marine fishes, with separate spinous and rayed dorsal fins and pelvic fi ns oft en joined into a disc, that live on or in the substrate and are generally inconspicuous. Color patterns may range from brightly patterned to drab and camoufl aged. Th e composition of this family has changed since the description of the fi rst Gobius by Linnaeus (1758), but it has always been the most speciose of gobioid taxa, and the one that contains the most well-known examples of goby biology and ecology. Various classifi cations based on morphology have delineated Gobiidae as the largest of six to nine gobioid families (Miller, 1973; Hoese, 1984; Harrison, 1989; Pezold, 1993; Nelson, 2006); reevaluations of gobioid systematics based on molecular data have shown that the smaller, distinctive families historically separated from the bulk of gobioid taxa are actually nested within the larger groups (Akihito et al., 2000; Wang et al., 2001; Th acker, 2003; Rüber and Agorreta, 2011, Chapter 1.2 of this volume). A revised six-family clade-based classifi cation (Th acker, 2009) identifi es a Gobiidae that includes all genera of the former taxa Gobiinae, Microdesmidae, Ptereleotridae, Schindleriidae,

Shape variation of the Indian Ocean slender mudskipper, Scartelaos tenuis (Day, 1876) from the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea (Gobioidei: Gobiidae)

The shape diversity among populations of Scartelaos tenuis (Day 1876) from five stations (194 specimens) in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz (Qeshm Island), and the Sea of Oman were investigated. The shape variation was assessed by geometric morphometrics, using 14 morphological landmarks. The two sexes were not distinguishable by the shape. Fish samples were classified into two distinct grou...

Species diversity and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of Gobiidae in Salmanshahr, coastal area of the southern Caspian Sea

The gobies are non-commercial fishes in the Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea for which population dynamics and stock status are poorly known. In this survey, we tried to define species diversity and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of Gobiidae by using beach seine nets in Salmanshahr, the southern Caspian Sea. From March 2011 to April 2012, 224 specimens representing 4 gobiid species, belonging to...

Thalasseleotrididae, new family of marine gobioid fishes from New Zealand and temperate Australia, with a revised definition of its sister taxon, the Gobiidae (Teleostei: Acanthomorpha)

Thalasseleotrididae n. fam. is erected to include two marine genera, Thalasseleotris Hoese & Larson from temperate Australia and New Zealand, and Grahamichthys Whitley from New Zealand. Both had been previously classified in the family Eleotrididae. The Thalasseleotrididae is demonstrably monophyletic on the basis of a single synapomorphy: membrane connecting the hyoid arch to ceratobranchial 1...

Studying morphological differences of sagittal otolith using geometric morphometric in two species of gobiidae Bathygobius meggitti (Hora and Mukeriji, 1936) and Istigobius ornatus (Ruppell, 183) in Makran coast, Oman Sea

This study aims to investigate the morphological variety using morphological differences of otolith in two species of Bathygobius meggitti and Istigobius ornatus from gobiidae family and their populations in Makran coast, Southeast of Iran. In order to do this, 56 samples of goby were caught and collected from three stations of Tis, Lipar, and Big Sea during spring and summer of 2018. Right and...
